Review of The Expendables (2000) by Dov D — 01 May 2014
For a film marketed as a 1980s style action thriller, Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables sure does use a significant amount of modern-day filming/choreographing techniques. The only thing 80s about this movie is the cast.
.. I mean, going into a movie like this, you don't expect there to be any plot or redeeming narrative (which there isn't), so you won't be disappointed in that; but you will be disappointed in the action sequences, which were sloppy for a film like this.
After five minutes, there is no doubt that Stallone both wrote and directed this movie, which is not necessarily a good thing. Bottom line, it's a dumb good time that most people will enjoy, but there's no substance whatsoever here.
