Review of The Expendables (2000) by Emod L — 02 Sep 2014
So much potential form all these great action stars, but the movie manages to fall flat. The very begining even has a bad vibe, the opening credits go on for at least three minutes while in the background absolutely nothing happens.
It starts off after the group was already made and been together for years, so we don't really know the characters, they are undeveloped and we don't learn much about them throughout the film.
The only things we know about them is that they are all tough guys who were hand picked to all be together for one epic movie. Well unfortunately it didn't work. Most action scenes were pretty over the top and amusing but they really weren't very well done.
The effects for the blood and some of the fire was just sad horribly done CGI, as was so much else. The characters are bland for all scenes, and make there no depth into their group. Some scenes were cool, like the plane strafing the dock, and the begining of the castle battle with the rock music blaring, but the the music stopped and the scene became fake and less exciting again.
And throughout the film every one of our tough guys manage to dodge every single one of the bullets that the hundreds of highly trained enemy soldiers fired at them. So the movie had potential, but it didn't succeed at all, although some scenes were amusing at best.
A simple compilation of 80s action stars teaming up.
