Review of The Expendables 2 (2012) by Kendall C — 06 Jul 2013
Without going into too much, The Expendables 2 is D-U-M-B. The acting isn't great, the script isn't well written, and the entire film is RIDDLED with clichés. However, in a case like this film, is being dumb necessarily a bad thing? No, not in the slightest.
The film obviously has problems, but it's self-aware of this by being completely over the top with violence and using a lot of cheesy and silly dialogue. The violence in this film is pretty much what makes it because it's a huge send up of the 80s action movies by being completely silly and doing things such as shooting an enemy's head off with one blow or missiles sending people flying.
Fortunately, the film is packed with this from start to finish, making it one enjoyable ride. The action scenes were never boring, but actually quite exciting and hysterical. The dialogue in this film is the other benefactor to this movie's success.
While not being delivered fantastically by the actors, the script obviously knows what kind of film it's in. With actors referencing their own films (including mentioning catchphrases from such classics as The Terminator and Die Hard), it makes the film even more enjoyable than it already was.
They even through in a good and funny Chuck Norris joke because of the self-awareness. The Expendables 2 is a very hard film to talk about because it's meant to actually seen, rather than read about.
I highly recommend that people see this because it's a fun time to be had and is well worth the time to watch it.
