Review of The Expendables (1988) by Nicolás T — 18 Sep 2012
The trailer flashed three names that could only exist in dreams: Stallone, Willis, and Schwarzenegger. The biggest action stars of the 80's, all in one movie! Well, sort of. The three of them were all in the same movie, in the same scene, too.
However, Willis and Schwarzenegger were only in here for short cameos, a problem that was easily fixed for the sequel. Besides that, the film plays like a typical 1980's action movie: An army of bad guys have taken over a fictitious island, and a small group of guys goes in and kills everyone and saves the day.
Thats the plot, and the movie flaunts its simplicity proudly. My only quarrel with this movie is that it takes itself too seriously. With a premise this goofy, it should be big, silly fun. Instead, it plays it straight faced.
The last twenty minutes is a typical barrage of bullets and explosions, and boy, is it fun to watch 5 guys take out an army of 400 soldiers. The acting is typical action movie style acting, cheesy lines delivered with all the conviction in the world.
Willis' cameo is the best because in the little time he is given, he sets his chaeacter as a stone cold CIA agent who doesn't care about anything but keeping his reputation clean. This is a fun movie to watch, and any action fan will enjoy it.
