Review of The Exorcist (1973) by Dan C — 31 Aug 2012
The Exorcist is excellent. The aura of pure evil that permeates the proceedings is simply landmark, from the brief images of demons that appear all over the place to the nauseating vileness of the possession itself.
The visual imagination and performances on display here are fresh even today, and obviously influential. It's a spectacle, as horror should be, and elementally chilling. I never found it scary, but its atmosphere is oppressive.
I don't think it's perfect, however; at times the story left me scratching my head or wondering what the point was. But it succeeds for all the reasons cited. It's certainly my second favorite Devil picture, after Rosemary's Baby, and leagues above the abysmal Omen.
