Emily Rose is apparently based on a true story - which involves a botched excorcism by a Roman Catholic priest. The movie is innovative in that it's actually a court room drama. Father Moore is charged with negligant homicide in the death of Emily Rose.
His advice to Emily to stop taking her medication comes under scrutiny, but throughout the trial Father Moore claims his innocence and suggests that he was only acting in the best interest of Emily. If you ask me the ending is a bit of a cop out - which ultimately appeases both views.
I have no idea about the real story that led to the making of this story - but it is kind of scary stuff. The movie actually gives some pause for consideration, even if at times it feels a bit absurd.
