Review of The Ex (2006) by Ceph J — 09 Nov 2009
It's billed as a comedy but actually should have been a horror film "The Sociopath." Even the premise is wrong. Jason Bateman is "The Ex" but it was actually a one-night stand with Amanda Peet (who looks beautiful but is wasted in a monotonous role).
When her husband, Zach Braff, comes to work for Bateman, he tries to undermine Braff and win Peet back. It's not really fun but the movie is saved by Braff who underplays his role wisely and tries to wring humor in the script.
Besides Braff, I really liked Lucian Maisel who plays the smart Alec, Wesley. The direction is fine and it would have helped tremendously if the movie didn't end abruptly. What's in Bateman showing up in Barcelona, now crippled, for a job? Didn't he know it was a joke since there's no, obviously, employment letter.
