Review of The Evil Dead (1981) by Eddy C — 30 Jan 2015
At last! Something new to the horror genre. Okay, so there is a group of good-looking 20-somethings who decide to go to a cabin in the middle of nowhere and.....wait...so you've seen this set-up before? To be fair, 'The Evil Dead' was made in 1981 but there isn't much else to it other than these young adults becoming possessed one at a time.
If you can endure the grainy picture and 80s horror funky music then you're halfway there. We learn little about the force at hand or even the protagonists. Most of them are possessed pretty quickly, subsequently turning events into an one-man survival show.
He's not exactly Schwarzenegger or Iko Uwais from 'The Raid' so it's not even a cool one-man survival show. To its credit, 'Evil Dead' is weirdly fun because of the outrageously OTT horror, with Sam Raimi making use out of all the ingredients in his mum's cupboard to produce some disturbing visual effects.
Many will like that it doesn't take itself seriously and it's certainly good at advocating practical effects over CGI. Sadly it doesn't have enough going for it and should be considered past its time.
