Review of The Evil Dead (1981) by Maria R — 26 Mar 2013

I've read so many books and articles about the making of this film, it's impossible for me not to respect and love everything about it even though I don't enjoy it very much. From shooting no-budget super 8 movies in his backyard (starring his childhood buddy Bruce), to directing one of the highest grossing blockbuster franchises of all time (with cameos of his childhood buddy Bruce), the humble story of Sam Raimi and his crazy bunch of friends is just delightful.

This is a ridiculous, grisly, nasty film that I find to be quite unpleasant, but the naive and sincere passion that fills every frame is kind of charming. Inspiring in the weirdest of ways.
