If you were to go based on modern day standards, the effects were cheesy and the acting wasn't very good. The pure creepiness of this movie made it scary and actually gave you chills. This was a classic 80's horror movie and you have to expect the corniness of it.
Even though some parts were laughable when they maybe shouldn't have been, Sam Raimi started a cult with this movie and it will be remembered as a classic.
