Review of The Evil Dead (1981) by Taylor B — 10 Dec 2013
The Evil Dead is in the highest caliber of horror movies. It is also one of the greatest examples of using a very low budget to great effect. The reason why The Evil Dead works is because it has a perfect combination of intense terror, gory violence and dark humor.
It has some great scares that feel real and don't come off as cheap or hokey and at the same time has some humor to make the film a bit more fun. The film also benefits from the awesomeness of Bruce Campbell, his character is very cool and extremely entertaining.
But make no mistake, this is a horror movie. It is disturbing and very violent, even with the added humor. But that's what makes this movie so great. It has so many intense scares yet finds a way to be funny.
A truly great horror classic. Rated R For Strong Grisly Violence and Gore, a Brief Rape and Nudity(My rating).
