The Evil Dead, in my estimation anyways, is one of the most imperfect perfect movies ever made. In a decade where horror movies came out of every possible corner of the world with a wide spectrum of qualities, Sam Raimi's original masterpiece achieves greatness in spite of itself.
Everything is held together with duct tape and the effects are mostly obvious, but it somehow captures the kind of low budget magic you would want from a low budget horror movie. It, of course, started a huge plot trend for horror movies, but it also started a series of fun horror movies.
It also made Bruce Campbell a B-movie star. And even though it was considered a video nasty in the UK when it was made, it's heralded today as not just a great horror movie, but also a terrific piece of filmmaking.
Even by today's standards, it's still a grueling piece of cinema.
