Review of The Evil Dead (1981) by Brandon W — 19 Mar 2016
The Evil Dead is the first film of the series, directed and written by Sam Raimi, and it stars Bruce Campbell in a supernatural horror film about a group of friends going to an unknown cabin, and when they went to the basement, they saw a book and a tape recorder.
The problem however, is that when they play the recording, they accidentally let out a supernatural that's trying to get them all, one by one. When the Evil Dead series was on DirecTV, I was very looking forward to them again, and I wondered if the first Evil Dead movie holds up still as the scariest film that I've seen.
In surprise, it actually does which I'm very glad that it is. The plot is simple, but the movie takes every advantage of it to make it interesting. The acting is good, and that is when before Bruce Campbell is well known.
The special effects look really impressive to this day, even if it's low budget, at least it's better than big budgeted Hollywood films these days. It's very atmospheric, and every scare that it had, really effected me a lot that it keeps getting a jump out of me.
I like that the camera is chasing the person, but I never get to see what it is. There are a lot of disturbing moments in it, and it's smart too. The design of the deadites look very creepy to look at, and once it gets to the end, not only does it get more disturbing, but it also turns out to be one of the most disgusting scenes that I ever seen, and I've seen a lot of gory films.
I'm very impressed with what the movie accomplished with its low budget, and with great scares, great effects, and an creepy atmosphere, The Evil Dead is one of those horror films that I'll never forget.
