Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Chase Whale (135) for Central Track (30) on 24 Sep 2014

The Equalizer is a bit flat and by-the-numbers, but it's also good old-fashioned shoot-'em-up splatter fun…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Michael Phillips (2,622) for Chicago Tribune (6,211) on 24 Sep 2014

For an hour or so The Equalizer glides along and works; in the second hour, plus change, it turns into a shameless slaughter contrivance with…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Frank Swietek (3,473) for One Guy's Opinion (3,473) on 24 Sep 2014

Seems to beg for a 'used' label, not primarily because it's based on an old TV show, but because it stubbornly embraces the tired tropes of…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Dustin Putman (2,479) for TheFilmFile.com (2,314) on 24 Sep 2014

The Equalizer isn't above excess—there is a slow-motion walk away from one of screen history's most bombastic explosions, for instance—but…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Katherine Monk (493) for Canada.com (402) on 24 Sep 2014

Smart, creative protagonists who are both handyman and commando are impossible to resist, so couple that with a desire to do real good in the…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Tim Robey (1,578) for The Telegraph (1,120) on 24 Sep 2014

Fuqua’s film is lacking much of an intelligible plot other than “tough hombre rights wrongs in ways pushing the boundaries of a 15 rating”…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Jason Zingale (478) for Bullz-Eye.com (1,091) on 24 Sep 2014

The Equalizer is hardly groundbreaking stuff compared to Fuqua and Washington's last collaboration, but it's a slick crowd-pleaser that provides…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Scott Tobias (1,684) for The Dissolve (1,478) on 24 Sep 2014

Say this for The Equalizer: It gets the job done, and that job, to quote A Clockwork Orange, is delivering a little of the old ultra-violence…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Brad Keefe (343) for Columbus Alive (355) on 24 Sep 2014

The end result is a weird mishmash that is too corny to be a good vengeance drama and too serious to be a good popcorn flick…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Christopher Gray (138) for Slant Magazine (8,298) on 24 Sep 2014

All this should build up to a moderately engaging battle of wits, but Richard Wenk's script has little interest in wit and no capacity for psychology…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Ann Hornaday (1,919) for Washington Post (9,851) on 24 Sep 2014

For all of The Equalizer’s overkill, Washington retains an admirable air of seriousness, embodying McCall as a believable figure of purity…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Tom Meek (408) for Paste Magazine (2,906) on 24 Sep 2014

On the whole, The Equalizer never finds any sense of confluence, but in parts it can be thrilling, even rapturously macabre…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Brian Orndorf (4,059) for Blu-ray.com (2,093) on 24 Sep 2014

An unpleasant cartoon; another offering of gratuitous behavior from Fuqua, while Washington slowly but surely reduces his once peerless charisma…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Daniel Eagan (552) for Film Journal International (5,095) on 24 Sep 2014

Fresh paint can't disguise the shaky structure underneath The Equalizer, a routine spy vigilante thriller…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Matt Pais (1,519) for RedEye (906) on 24 Sep 2014

Though Robert's really never in trouble, the movie has a fair amount of suspense, with Fuqua allowing death to linger in the shadows…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Soren Anderson (264) for Seattle Times (3,524) on 24 Sep 2014

The line separating the bad guys from the good is almost nonexistent…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Cary Darling (452) for Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com (553) on 24 Sep 2014

Just having Washington in the title role elevates the film from a tired rerun - complete with (yawn) brutal Russian mobsters - to a rousing,…

By Soren Andersen (496) for Seattle Times (3,524) on 24 Sep 2014

The line separating the bad guys from the good is almost nonexistent…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Thomas Derwin (25) for FILMINK (Australia) (1,405) on 24 Sep 2014

Unfortunately, by the time the final act rolls around, there's little more left on Fuqua's mind than a grisly, hardware store-sponsored cops…

Review of The Equalizer (2014)

By Louis Black (103) for Austin Chronicle (7,653) on 23 Sep 2014

Washington is always superb when playing characters with a surface calm, but a boiling-over interior…
