Review of The Equalizer (2014) by Humberto F — 12 Apr 2015
I'll never look at a Home Depot the same way again after this movie. Enjoyable actioner is hardly Washington's best, but he never fails to add integrity to the thinnest material. Washington is probably ready to do a Marvel movie at this point, since this is just an R-rated action cartoon.
At least Man on Fire had some plausibility, but here Washington walks around like some kind of bogeyman with his ability where he needs to be, ready to maim and kill with corkscrews and other everyday items.
I kept waiting for the reveal that Márton Csókás's demented Russian psychopath was Dracula or something (there's even a musical cue with the music box when he kills the Russian hooker). When the two opposing killers finally square off against each other, I found the movie resembled more a horror movie with two monsters facing off.
The final coda shows Washington embracing the Robert McCall character that tv fans recognized. If more movies are to come, although I enjoyed this one just fine, I hope it resembles the series more.
