Review of The Equalizer (2014) by Slade T — 08 Aug 2015
Denzel Washington makes an action drama released last year in 2014. Mr. Washington has made successful action dramas before, and I guarantee you your top dollar, it won't be his last. This film was from an 80's television show. The tv show was successful which is hard to do in the 80's simply because there were so many damn shows. All in all it was a fresh and fulfilling movie because it satisfied the basic tenets. FYI this is not Man on fire, and this is Not Training Day( even though it has the same director Antoine Fuqua) And this is also not SAFEHOUSE, a movie that I did not like at all thanks to Ryan Reynolds who can make a sorry character be sorry in style.
This movie The Equalizer was very successful in the box office especially internationally. Without further ado, I will explain WHY I RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE The Equalizer, using the alphabet.(Sorry not sorry for any spoilers that may be leaked in this review) A: The Equalizer had a movie star by the name of Denzel Washington, sure this is no rule written in stone carried by Moses but it helps to gain wide appeal for a franchise. Usually you need a movie star. Whaaaaaat? Franchise you say? Yes, infact there development of The Equalizer 2 starring Denzel Washington...OF COURSE... DUH. That goes without mentioning.
B: this movie is very simple and realistic. Even idiots can follow along. No super crazy plot twists and the characters are very straight forward. The movie allows you to get to know the characters and take a journey with them in this life that is very realistic. Realistic how? Are there vigilantes roaming around...? Maybe the whole point is that in this movie the vigilante was hidden and didn't take credit for the good he did. Pretty humble right. And also the fact that in real life there are child/adolescent sex slaves in the U.S. and there is also organized crime groups like the Russian mob. And on top of that there are everyday people caught in the midst of these unfortunate situations that need some time of assistance getting out.
C: There is plenty of suspense and thriller like type of stuff because you don't know what Robert McCall the main character is capable of. You don't even know what his previous profession is. I absolutely love the mystery.
D:As if I needed to mention this but this tenet is ACTING. Great acting. Characters were believable and pretty well flushed out. Even the bad guys u were like... ah I get it. The main character who Denzel plays is like MacGuyver way more BA in an awe inspiring way. Shout out to Chloe Grace Moretz who beat out 24 year old women to play that part. I was impressed because the role was very mature. I sensed a Lee Evans vibe with the relationship that Robert and Teri had kind of like The Walking Dead video game with Dear young Clementine. Some people just want to help and Robert McCall was one of those people. It is inspiring because alot of shit would get done in this country if we did help other people by any means necessary. I say the law is greater than truth because the law as we know it is corrupt and that is exactly what this movie portrays, but I digress.
E:special/ visual fx were awesome. Lets give it to the guys in post who were very creative in the way the action scenes went and shit happened fast too so you may need to rewatch it. I know I will because I was like damn... how did they-.
F:Music is very important in motion pictures. Luckily they used a successful song that was also used in The Wolverine movie, yes it was by Zach Hemsey song Vengeance. Zach has been putting in work since Inception and it is so visceral and gets you into the zone. The movie zone of course.
G:Why not end on a G. Last but not least Antoine Fuqua the director mentioned is a good damn director. It's not easy to make movies in this industry and he has also proven himself to be worthy and I will watch his movies until I am either disappointed or he stops making new movies.
H: Sike it's not over! Another reason why I like The Equalizer is because this character Robert McCall never uses a gun. That is like on some Bruce Lee status I mean if you never use a gun and you are going against dudes with guns. You obviously have to be smarter so boom. mic drop.
