Review of The Equalizer (2014) by Brian S — 12 Jan 2016
Oh ho ho this is a real treat. a mix of Taken, Gran Torino, and Training Day. the mix of subplots and characters and villains makes the story a TOTAL mess. there are.... like 3 'finales' throughout the whole film.
Denzel is REAL intimidating, but he is also unstoppable so you know how the movie goes. there's just such a wash of 'will the Russians kill him or will he kill all of them?!' that the whole movie just breezes past and you don't really feel anything for any of the characters.
the film itself is pretty entertaining, mostly due to the charisma of Denzel combined with the editing and almost superhero-status he gains (or should I say RE-gains) over the course of the film that culminates in a REALLY COOL final fight in a hardware store (best setting for something like this).
but the bloated story leaves the film being pretty bland overall. this would be fun with friends once it hits Netflix, but probably not worth the ticket price for a theater.
