Review of The English Patient (1996) by Homer W — 03 Feb 2009
A beautiful film. This revolves around the flashbacks experienced by the 'English' patient - a man recovered from the burning wreckage of an aircraft in 1940s North Africa. A passionate love story as well as an unfolding mystery, this film is so well shot you'll wonder where the 2 hours & 45 minutes went.
It won several oscars & it's not hard to see why. The cinematography & art direction is just exquisite; films like this come along once in a blue moon, when you feel you have been transported into another world.
Ralph Fiennes is perfectly cast as the aloof patient being cared for by a nurse (Juliet Binoche.) and Kristin Scott Thomas provides the smouldering beauty and obvious motivation for an adultery which has tragic consequences.
Get your hanky at the ready - this is historical romance at its very finest.
