Review of The English Patient (1996) by Giffy G — 24 Apr 2009
This was actually my third attempt to watch the movie. The first two times, I made it half an hour and then fell asleep. This time, I made it through to the end. I was a far larger fan of the present tense narrative, with its compelling mysteries, intriguing love story, and characters whose allegiances I was unsure of.
Of course, the past tense narrative was the bulk of the movie. The past tense narrative was self-important, overblown, cardboard, and completely uncompelling. It was yet another rehashing of the "he loves a married woman" storyline.
I don't know why this movie won Best Picture. It was unoriginal and overlong.
