Review of The English Patient (1996) by Henk E — 21 May 2010
A great movie, but if you are not in the mood for it, it can be painfully boring! It is long. it is heavy and it feels very "English"... excuse the pun!
Shot beautifully, with some exquisite acting The English Patient follows two very different love stories. The main love story about a love affair between Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott I found to be a bit tedious at times because both characters are so reserved and egocentric. I just couldn't relate to the two characters, yet at the end of the movie I still felt a great loss and sadness for them.
I absolutely loved the second love story about a war nurse (Juliette Binoche) who believes she is the reason everyone she loves will die, and then finds love with a soldier who disarms bombs.
A truly breathtaking movie very reminiscent to classics like Doctor Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia... but like these movies one only watches it once in a long while.
