Review of The English Patient (1996) by Karan J — 22 May 2010
Anthony Minghella's masterpiece, based on the novel by Michael Ondaatje, may be one of the best tragic love stories to date. With wonderful performances by Ralph Fiennes, Kristin Scott Thomas and Juliette Binoche, this film is definately one of the best of the 90s.
Minghella leads us plausably to learn about the tragic love story of Lazslo de Almasy and Katherine Clifton, while he circles down around an unfinished puzzle of mystery and common stories.
The film opens with a plane flying above the desert, carrying two passengers in its open cockpits. Throughout the film we will learn who these passengers are, why they are in the plane, and what happens next.
The "present" in the film shows us nurse Hana taking care of the english patient in an abandoned monastery in Italy. The "past" shows us the details of the tragic love story of Lazslo de Almasy and Katherine Clifton.
This is a film that may be watched twice, and it will be worth.
