5: David Lean never made a film like this and I don't think he could have. This is not to say that The English Patient is as good as Lawrence of Arabia - the greatest film ever made - or even The Bridge on the River Kwai, but it is a unique modern masterpiece.
Anthony Minghella definitely left his mark on the world. All you need is one film to remain immortal and this is his. I simply mean that Lean came from a different era and likely would not have been able to adapt his technique to a modern Lean-like epic of this nature.
Exquisitely beautiful; incredibly and intensely m0ving to the point of flowing tears each and every time; powerfully epic; it just doesn't get much better. I can think of no other contemporary masterpiece that approaches it in terms of power or scope.
It's like a shot in the dark that encompasses and includes everything one could possibly want in an epic romantic film. I am so grateful that it has finally been released on Blu-Ray. It's the kind of epic that seems to barely scratch the surface of the story, yet it reveals an intense and unending depth of feeling and majesty.
Plus, it includes one of Kristin Scott Thomas' best performances (and she gets naked). And it includes one of Ralph Fiennes best, as well as Juliette Binoche. And the rest of the cast is spectacular.
It really doesn't get much better. Incredible. This is my kind of film.
