While it may have started the Weinstein's 'Oscar-bait' tradition, 'The English Patient' is still a fine film, skillfully crafted by director Anthony Minghella, boasting mesmerizing desert cinematography that harkens back to the days of Lean, a lush and romantic score by Gabriel Yared and strong performances from its distinguished cast, especially Fiennes in an unusually sympathetic and heart-wrenching role.
