Review of The English Patient (1996) by Gemini F — 16 Apr 2010
A story of love, betrayal and treason during WW2.
Ralph Fiennes plays the Hungarian Count Almasy, whose engagement with a british archeological team in North Africa, brings him into contact with Catherine (Kristin Scott-Thomas).She's married to one of the team-members(Colin Firth), but Almasy and Catherine are drawn to each other with such strength, that the affair is almost inevitable.
The story is told through flashbacks, towards the end of the war, while Almasy is lying in bed in Italy, with a face burnt beyond all recognition. His nurse (Juliette Binoche)is eagerly reading the "English Patient's" memoirs, herself trying to forget her own losses.
Sumptuous imagery of a vast golden-brown desert landscape, contrasted with the olive trees of the italian countryside makes this movie a visual feast as well as a deeply emotional experience.A movie you will not soon forget.
