Review of The End of the Tour (2015) by Jessica T — 12 Nov 2015
To be perfectly honest, I was very much looking forward to this movie, and I was certainly left wanting. Maybe it's because I'm not familiar with DFW's work - in fact I'm sure that's a large part of it - but the overall narrative just did not resonate.
There are some excellent, incredibly insightful lines (David's theories on pre-middle age depression, and on shyness are particularly great), and I enjoyed the way this film depicts its (protagonist's) subject in such a relatable, flawed manner.
And I do mean flawed; there's an ugliness to him that is covered up by a well-maintained Southern-nice-guy routine. I found that aspect fascinating, but a few beautiful lines can really only take a movie so far; before it gets *real* boring.
