Review of The End (1978) by Allan C — 23 Jun 2013
Burt Reynolds is kind of an easy guy to dismiss ("Stroker Ace" anyone?), but he really is a very versatile actor, handling drama ("Nickelodeon" "Boogie Nights"), action ("Sharkey's Machine" "Deliverance") or comedy ("Smokey and the Bandit" "The Longest Yard").
However, Burt also had a lot of serious stinkers along the way which makes it harder to remember his quality films and performances. "The End" is directed by Burt and falls into the "Hooper" category as a silly and rather unmemorable comedy, but still pretty entertaining.
The film is greatly helped by featuring a great cast that includes Dom DeLuise, Sally Field, Strother Martin, Joanne Woodward, Norman Fell, Kristy McNicho, Robby Benson, Carl Reiner, Frank McRae, Sheriff Rosco Coltrane (James Best, who was actually a producer on the film and real Hollywood royalty, Pat O'Brien and Myrna Loy.
Not a classic, but worth watching for Burt fans.
