Review of The Empire Strikes Back (1980) by Lenny R — 08 Jun 2017
Builds on A New Hope, expanding the universe, developing the story and characters, and bringing in a somewhat more mature tone, making it (for me) the best Star Wars film yet. I love the visual style and the darker atmosphere; space never felt so claustrophobic. The dialogue is far better than in Hope, allowing the actors to give much more naturalistic performances. Even the exposition feels like natural conversation.
The cat 'n' mouse between Vader and the Falcon keeps it exciting (still), and the dynamic between Han, Leia and Threepio works brilliantly. And now that Palpatine is actually played by Ian McDiarmid (sorry Clive), it's almost flawless (aside from a couple of other "special ed" superfluities near the end).
