Review of The Emperor's New Groove (2000) by Hans G — 06 Feb 2013
Ok so I thought I'd give some "new" Disney a go and finally got around to seeing this flick - only 8 years after release so not too bad :).
The animation here is wonderful. It's bold and striking and shifts between the natural and the highly stylized seamlessly. So top marks for animation basically.
The story... Very lightweight, very in your face this is good this is bad, in other words you know upfront what you're getting with this movie. The family aspect to this film was a bit too sickly for my liking, and I can usually put up with a fair amount of cheese. But the over the top cute kids complete with gaps in their teeth, piggy tails, and what I can only describe as drug eyes, takes away from any real heart this film could have had. Again Disney also casts voices that don't entirely suit the character's appearance, with one exception being Patrick Warburton who I thought was exceptional (even if he is doing the same voice he uses on other shows).
The humour in this film is delightful and often catches you by surprise. On the whole it's quite enjoyable but no where near the standard of classic Disney.
