Review of The Emperor's New Groove (2000) by Matthew J — 13 Mar 2014
The Emperor's New Groove or: How I Learned to Stop Being Selfish and Embrace the Inner Llama. So this is about an arrogant emperor (David Spade) who really needs to get knocked back a couple of pegs.
He fires his administrator and she doesn't take it lightly, so she turns him into a llama, which is something he obviously wants to remedy with the quickness. This is a movie that is just enjoyable at every single turn, and it works for both kids and adults.
It's always fast moving, and it packs a very large number of jokes into its brief 78-minute runtime, so it never outstays its welcome. It's very colorful, with lots of visual gags that you have come to expect from modern animation.
I don't generally care for David Spade as an actor, but I do have a theory that the more annoying an actor is, the better voice-actor they make for, and Spade is suited just fine for this role. Also, I can't make it through this review without mentioning the talents of Patrick Warburton, who may just be my favorite voice-actor of all time with his deadpan delivery.
This is a blast, and I can't imagine kids not just eating this up.
