Review of The Emperor's New Groove (2000) by Johnny T — 09 May 2013
Exciting, clever sequences driven by surprisingly little plot and culminating in a climax full of the transmogrification animation was invented for. Doesn't aim too high or strain too hard; it is at ease inhabiting its pretty, miniature realm. A lively, invigorating comedy: a near-perfect mix of fresh characters, well-cast voices, superb visuals, and a fast-paced, fantasy-adventure plot. The unfussy, tossed-off quality actually helps give this original story zippy irreverence some of Disney's plusher cartoons lack. Suffers from a persistent case of narrative backsliding that only serves to make older members of the audience long for the days of the dwarves, beauties, and poisoned apples of Disney-yore, and younger ones squirm in their seats. A bright and zippy, but alarmingly over-campy and lighter-than-fluff cartoon feature. Picks up speed as it goes along and the finale is frenzied and, well, cartoonish.
VERDICT: "In The Zone" - [Mixed Reaction] These kinds of movies are usually movies that had some good things, but some bad things kept it from being amazing. This rating says buy an ex-rental or a cheap price of the DVD to own. If you consider cinema, ask for people's opinion on the film. (Films that are rated 2.5 or 3 stars).
