Review of The Emperor's New Clothes (2001) by Lauren - — 21 Aug 2007
This is an odd little film that was only released three or so years after its completion and though it is easy to see why it was held back for such a length of time, I oddly found it entertaining, like watching a less then successful knife throwing act at some run-down street Carnivale.
The film is a re-imagining of the last years in the life of Napoleon in which loyalist swap the real Emperor for a sailor look-a-like and while he indulges in luxury exile, the real Napoleon returns to Paris.
Both parts are played by Ian Holm who was so affective in Time Bandits as the short French Leader and though he isn?t awful he is greatly let down by both plot and script and seriously where is the funny in this comedy? Yet I still liked the film overall it was strangely touching, it is an interesting idea just not executed with much flair or success.
