Review of The Elephant Man (1980) by Matthew G — 25 Jan 2009
Wonderfully acted and presented in a unique and fresh Lynchian manner. As for the emotionalty of the film, it affected me for about the first 45 minutes. By then, I had internalized and accepted The Elephant Man's message of human cruelty.
The rest of the movie didn't keep tugging on my hearstrings as it did in the beginning, and viewing the final act felt almost like an act of sadism. All in all, a worthy film that told a tale worth telling, but failed to keep me emotionally engaged as I watched the misshapen John Merrick suffer mishap after misfortune.
