Review of The Elephant Man (1980) by Paul N — 05 Apr 2009
Visually beautiful, heart-wrenching film based (occasionally loosely) on the true story of the incredibly physically deformed Joseph (referred to as "John" in the film) Merrick's struggle for dignity and acceptance in Victorian-era London.
The performances are exemplary, particularly from Hurt and Hopkins, the makeup is phenomenal and Lynch's treatment of the material is sensitive and intelligent, yet retaining the filmmaker's wonder at the beauty of what others may consider ugly -- making him the perfect director for this project.
Visually and aurally, it's a natural progression from ERASERHEAD, yet Lynch shows admirable storytelling sense and restraint in presenting a highly affecting linear story.
