This is truly a well-made film that captures the varied personalities of its characters perfectly. The acting is superb and the direction is top-notch. It's a very moving story of a man who, despite his shocking appearance, was a charming, intelligent, and kind individual, and more human than some of the disgusting people who made fun of him and abused him.
It's a very sad film in that, while Merrick had friends who treated him well, he was also treated like trash by ignorant people. Some parts made me want to cry because Merrick is such a sympathetic character.
He may not have looked like everyone else, but he was a very sweet and graceful person. It's a movie that shows you that beauty is what lies within a person, not on the outside.
