Review of The Elephant Man (1980) by Isaac C — 14 Mar 2010
This is an amazing film that touches on many emotions. Slightly disturbing at first, then pity, sympathy, and an admiration for Merrick. The film is simple in many ways, but it always kept my full attention.
The script is also simple, but at times caught me off guard by how powerful it was. The Elephant Man is amazing from Hopkin's tear to the dramatic "I am not an animal! I am a human being!" While the focus of the film is John Merrick and his deformities, it also ironically highlights the depravity of "normal" people.
