The best and worst sides of humankind are portrayed here; I hadn't seen the film since I was a student and had forgotten quite how good a film The Elephant Man is. Lynch shows us the effects of 'John' Merrick upon those around him, the good and the bad, and makes us wonder how we would have treated Joseph Merrick had we met him during his short life, without wandering into mawkish sentimentality.
