Review of The Elephant Man (1980) by Shawn-Ray M — 15 Dec 2010
Even though I love David Lynch it was several years of studying his work before I realized he directed this movie. I know, shame on me.
Like The Straight Story made years later, this is a different sort of Lynch movie. It's a bit more straight forward of a drama than his usual surreal neo-noir work. I was glad Lynch still found a way to incorporate his trademark dream-like imagery. However, knowing what he has done later I kind of wish I saw this movie earlier. It isn't bad by any stretch, but not what I've come to be used to where Lynch is concerned.
Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt did amazing jobs here, especially Hurt, who had to showcase his talent underneath a heavy mask. John Hurt has always been a talented actor and it truly shows here.
The Elephant Man is a sad tale, but incredible all the same. It still holds up today as a remarkable film. Hopefully it won't get hit by the remake machine any time soon...
