Review of The Elephant Man (1980) by Hung-Ya L — 02 Feb 2015
Lynch turns in an empathy master class in this rags to riches to rags to riches telling of the Victorian freak-show veteran, John Merrick. It's a relatively straight tale by Lynches standards, but it still is at its best when exploring the dark, noisy, steaming underbelly of industrial Victorian London or in its nightmarish visions of elephants stampeding through a despondent Merricks consciousness.
Shot in beautifully photographed black and white with an exceptional John Hurt portraying Merricks transformation from suffering circus animal to toast of the London upper classes.
