Review of The Elementary Particles (2006) by Ilya B — 31 Dec 2007
German adaptation of Michel Houellebecq's excellent book. A good, if not great, film that explores a number of points from book, although mainly the human relationship issues. Moritz Bleibtreu from Run Lola Run shines the best, playing Bruno, who quickly spirals into mid-life crisis, playing a pretty loathsome character well enough to illicit both sympathy and empathy.
I didn't think that the look or the feel of the film was anything special and the strength of the direction was in bringing out good performances. Mixed with some rock and roll standards, it misses a lot of the book but captures some of its spirit and as a stand alone film it was a good and entertaining adult drama/comedy.
