Review of The Edukators (2004) by Ian P — 30 Aug 2007
This German film has been sitting patiently on my shelf for the past few months. It was always sidelined in favour of the latest Korean movie or an episode of terminally frustrating tv series 'Lost'. At the back of my mind I've been keeping it for a lazy weekend of quality films. It was definitely worth the wait.
Hans Weingartner's film takes time to build up its three main protagonists and this plays out well in the third act. Shot entirely on digital the film sometimes feels one step away from reality. You can empathize with the idealism of youth and the cold reality of what happens when a radical embraces the system. This is hammered home when the captive businessman declares that one day he shocked himself and just voted 'conservative'.
