Review of The Edukators (2004) by Ghiuli R — 25 Nov 2009
The message of " Die Fetten Jahre sind vorbei " failed in convincing me, and made me a bit angry too, but the concept was really interesting, and would have been a really amazing movie, if not for the second part. It looked like they didn't know what to do next, so they heap up some old socialist ideas.
The movie is really entertaining, never drags and I never could tell what will happen next, and that's a plus. The acting is great, especially Bruhl and Jentsch are really convincing.
"The edukators " are 3 young people that can't find their place in this "oh, so cruel world" , they get malcontent with the world around them, so they decid to make a stand.
They try to "educate" the unsuspected rich people (because everybody knows that beeing rich is a mortal sin!) who in their minds represents what is worst in this world:capitalism.
Their method: rearranging furniture in peoples houses while nobody is at home, and leaving messages like: "Your days of plenty are numbered" or "You have too much money", Well, I call it vandalism.
And that's one of the problems, they are not that radical enough, their "crusade" comes from boredom and frustration with their own lives rather then dissatisfaction with the world. There's no deeds to prove me wrong, and the discourse about injustice seemed forced, redundant, and very convenient to sustain what they were doing.
They pretend that they want to change the world , but I didn't see anything palpable in that direction. Browbeating is not the best policy (but what can I expect when they talk about Che Guevara like somekind of hero, maybe some knowledge would do good),.
In the end they stand somewhere in between, like somekind of paper heroes.
