Review of The Edukators (2004) by Steven N — 06 Dec 2009
The the German film "The Edukators" without a doubt carries with it a heavy-handed political message, at its heart it really is about so much more than that. The film tells the story of a group of twenty-something's that break into the houses of the filthy rich, rearrange their furniture, and leave threatening messages behind.
During one such excursion, things of course go wrong. This is a character piece, and every character feels fleshed out and real. There are dimensions, and layers, and all sorts of interesting things that are unwrapped over the course of the film.
The script is well written, and takes some turns you might not see coming - which is always appreciated. The actors are good as well. I'm not German, but you don't have to be German to get a movie like this because at its heart it's about people - and when everything is stripped away we're all pretty much the same.
Is the film perfect? No, of course not. Some scenes drag, and I would question a few musical choices. My gripes are small however, and there's a whole lot more good going on here than there is bad.
"The Edukators" is a surprising, interesting, well-crafted, sharp piece of work, and it's more than worth a viewing.
