Review of The Edukators (2004) by Mike C — 28 Jun 2011
I must have passed this movie over a hundred times, probably because it is in German and that's not a favorite thing of mine to listen to for two-plus hours. Finally watched it and it was pretty good.
A pair of guys participates in some cool civil disobedience: breaking into the homes of the wealthy, rearranging furniture (but not stealing), and leaving vaguely threatening notes about their status. This takes a turn for the worse when the girfriend gets involved with the other guy and they get caught by one of the rich guys.
That I thought might be a left-wing piece actually turned into a more balance movie. While in captivity, the rich guy gives the side of the wealthy. It is never disclosed what he does or how he got wealthy, but it is clear that he was like these kids as a youth himself. He delivers a great line: To be under 30 and not liberal is to have no heart; to be over 30 and be liberal is to have no brain. In other words, it is great to have ideals when you are young, but as you grow and see that you have to take care of yourself, it is foolish not to do the best you can. Eh, it's a great line and worth debating and discussing, but how far do you take it?
In the end, a decent bit of romance in there plus the politics. My sound was messed up, I thought intentionally, but I can't find it anywhere so must have been a bad file on netflix. Regardless, probably worth watching as it might be fun to discuss.
