Review of The Education of Shelby Knox (2005) by Vanessa V — 08 Mar 2008
This documentary is about a youth commission in Lubbock, TX that attempted to get sex education in the schools. A preacher in the city said that Christianity is the least tolerant religion in the world.
Shelby later said that Christianity should not be intolerant. I think that Christians should consider some behaviors to be inappropriate, but when they say that they are intolerant, they really mean that they hate and hurt others.
Many Christians try to mix religion with government or school, but those institutions are separate and should be kept that way, but where is the role of the family? Near the end, Shelby mentions some lawsuit that gay students have against the school board, but the documentary never gives sufficient details on the lawsuit.
Shelby discusses how God is forgiving and wonderful and could not possibly send gays to hell. The preacher says that Jesus loves all equally, including gays, yet many Christians, including that preacher, do not love gays.
The preacher says that if you do not like the school's stance, go to a private or charter school rather than a public school. At the very end of the movie, you find out that the superintendent of the school had extramarital sex with a woman on school property, and he quit his job and left Lubbock.
I always felt that conservatives were conservative in thought but liberal in action...
