Review of The Edge of Seventeen (2016) by Ian G — 05 Feb 2017
The Edge of Seventeen is a great capturing of the John Hughes teen romantic comedies of yesterday with a slight updating for vernacular for the millenials set focusing on Hailee Steinfield in that formative year of seventeen trying to figure out who she is, being too beyond her years wisdom wise and not being able to connect really well with anyone in her bracket outside of swooning from afar for one of the pretty kids and her longtime sole best friend who ends up starting accidentily a relationship with her older brother.
Hailee's motor mouth delivery is again on display her to great effect, first being seen in the Coen's True Grit which was her breakout role, and shows her strengths as an actress and not just as a hyphenate as she has explored singing releasing some albums and featuring in the Pitch Perfect series.
Also her banter with the grizzled veteran Woody Harelson is absolutely perfect and would be awesome to see in some future projects. A nice gem that would have been great to see have more box office success.
Solid.
