Edge Of Seventeen deserves praise for being brave, smart, and, for the most part, natural. Main character Nadine is portrayed as fragile, but also heavily flawed. Credit goes both to Steinfeld and the writers.
Best friend-turned-frenemy Krista is gentle and kind, not stereotypically pretty and vicious. And nemesis older brother Darian is indeed an annoying suck-up, but he is responsible and grounded. Every character stereotype is taken and twisted to be fresh and more normal.
And they have an Asian-American love interest! This movie has great acting, writing, and isn't afraid to try new things.
