The Edge of Seventeen is a smart, fast paced, sharply written and perfectly acted specimen of the coming of age genre. It's consistently funny, compelling, entertaining, and moving in a way that comes off effortless.

But what I admire most, I think, of this film is the way it presents its heroine. Hailee Steinfeld's character is a bit of a Holden Caulfield; she's difficult, self centered, and also brilliant.

While you can't always like her, you can genuinely empathize. It's really impressive. Unfortunately, the structure of the film is extremely conventional for this genre, and I found myself predicting every single major plot point as soon as it's introduced.
