Review of The Edge of Seventeen (2016) by Chuck F — 25 May 2017
I grew up in a different country but I can still connect to the themes shown in this movie and feel the authenticity of the emotions and the developments. Hailee Seinfeld is an amazing actress and I love the character that she portrayed.
As an Asian, I'm a little bit unease with the portrayal of the Korean boy, who is basically a stereotypical quiet, nerdy, and socially askward asian kid who also happens to have rich parents. I understand that the story is to say that quiet nerdy and awkward Asian boys may actually be very talented and attractive inside, but isn't it more effective, for the purpose of counteracting racial biases (which might not be the goal here), to portray an Asian kid who happens to be attractive in terms of personality as well? I find the fact that Nadine being attracted to a complete opposite of her personality a bit of a stretch and it would have been better with a fuller / less stereotypical Asian boy.
