Review of The Edge of Seventeen (2016) by Connor M — 29 May 2017
When I first watched the trailer, I couldn't be more excited about this film. The comedic aspects were there, and I loved the cast in this indie dramedy, so I couldn't wait to see the final product.
While I did enjoy this movie a lot, I don't believe I liked it as much as I thought I would. Nevertheless, this film is packed with emotional distress, hilarious moments, and lovable, relatable characters.
Hailee Steinfeld nailed her performance, but I found myself loving Woody Harrelson just a tad bit more. The writing was brilliant, and I really enjoyed the soundtrack played in the background as well, it fit the tone of the film very well.
Where the film started to stumble for me was the over-writing for a particular minor character, but it wasn't a huge issue for me. I believe this is an important film for the average teenager, and it is one of the better coming-of-age films that I've seen in a while.
Enjoyable film, and I look forward to seeing what writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig will be giving us in the future.
