Review of The Edge of Seventeen (2016) by Dorian G — 19 Jun 2017
A very personal and raw film. It manages to be quite funny throughout, while also authentically representing what it feels like to go through high school as an insecure mess. The performances are very good for the most part, and Hailee Steinfeld shows some unexpected depth.
My only real issue with "The Edge of Seventeen" is how 2016 it feels. By that I mean that the editing and cinematography and overall package really feels like a product of its time. And while I don't think being contemporary is a bad thing, I do think that it's going to feel dated and be less relatable in the future.
The film's look also isn't as unique as it should be, because it looks like every other modern teen comedy (aside from the lack of perfect skin and hair and whatnot, which I give it credit for), when it should feel as original as its script.
